Painting meets Photography: Color Field Gum Dichromate Prints

Color Field Gum Dichromate Print of a Photogram Mandala integrated within the bold colored space of the light sensitive emulsion.

I'm interested in creating prints with an atavistic quality, like old paintings on a sweaty temple wall or papyrus faithfully preserved under a layer of desert sand.

Max Marshall’s Color Field gum dichromate prints are characterized by an intuitive arrangement of color, shape, and form. His work explores the transportive effects of photographic mandalas and their alchemical fusion with colorful abstract compositions. Through the combination of thickly coated fields of gum dichromate emulsion and enlarged photogram negatives, lines are blurred between photographic realism and painterly illusion.

Both a painting and photograph, gum dichromate is the perfect medium to integrate painterly techniques into a photographic process. Max draws on a multitude of references, from Abstract Expressionism, Color Field Painting, Neo Tantrism, and traditional Mandala art.

His work is a counterbalance to the polished and sleek environments of the West. Attracted to the old and dilapidated, his work reproduces a color palette reflective of the sun-stained walls of Indian street corners. Through an expressive framework of symbolic diagrams and timeless symmetry, these prints were created to have a universal appeal and speak to people across all cultures and time.

India inspired color combinations. Atavistic art. Art that looks like it belongs on a sweaty temple wall or faithfully preserved under desert sand. Color Field Gum Dichromate Print of a Photogram Mandala integrated within the bold colored space of the light sensitive emulsion.
